Special Drugs = Special Processes!
If you are enrolled in the News Corp medical plan you are automatically enrolled with our pharmacy benefit manager CVS Caremark. If you have used them before you know that in addition to any CVS pharmacy – the Caremark plan offers you the ability to use over 60,000 participating pharmacies to fulfill your prescription.
But sometimes a script might be for a “specialty drug” – generally these are high complexity, high touch drugs – often derived from living cells and for the most part are taken intravenously through and injection or infusion.
If you are provided with a script for a “specialty drug” the process can be a little different. Here is what you should expect.
- When your doctor first calls the script into the pharmacy – the pharmacy would indicate to your doctor that this script should be run through the specialty pharmacy program. There is a good chance your doctor would already know this – but if not she would be notified when the script is sent out.
- After your script is received by CVS Specialty Pharmacy you will be notified by CVS Specialty Pharmacy as to when you can expect to receive your prescription through the mail.
- At that point you will also have the opportunity to indicate if you would like your prescription mailed to a place other than your home – including the ability to have them shipped to a local CVS for storage and pick up.
If you are prescribed a specialty drug it will also be worth registering for the Caremark Specialty website – and even consider downloading their mobile app for iOS or Android. Finally it’s worth noting that as with any prescription there are Formulary (discounted) and Non-Formulary (no discount) options available. You may want to ask CVS Specialty pharmacy if there are Formulary options for the drug you are prescribed.
